| New Delhi, July 21: India is a home to more than 6.8 lakh "registered" sex workers. As per the recent revelation by the government of India, these sex workers may or may not have a health certificate on sexually transmitted diseases.
In reply to an RTI filed by Ved Pal, a resident of Delhi, the ministry of health and family welfare admitted that the southern states of India have the maximum number of sex workers. Andhra Pradesh tops the list as the state has one lakh registered sex workers. Karnataka follows second with 79,000 female sex workers.
Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and West Bengal come in the top five Indian states with large number of sex workers.
A striking revelation surfaced when the RTI reply stated that there is not a single sex worker in Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, at least the government records say so.
It has also come to pass that Jammu and Kashmir has only 259 registered sex workers, which is the least in India.
Delhi leads the list of metros having sex workers with figures touching 37,900. GB Road is the only known red light area in Delhi and it has more sex workers than those in Mumbai.
According to the experts, a large number of sex workers in India remain undetected in government records. If Naco is to be believed, the total number of sex workers in India is more than 12.60 lakh.
The ministry of health and family welfare stated that the calculation of the total number of sex workers is based on information received from state AIDS Control Societies.
Pal had also sought information on what steps government was taking for the rehabilitation of the sex workers but he did not get a satisfactory reply. |
