New Delhi: Government's decision to award the prestigious Padma Bhushan to NRI hotelier Sant Singh Chatwal has not only offended BJP but also the leading names in the field of media. Pritish Nandy and Vir Sanghvi, the two stalwarts have come upfront in expressing their disappointment over government's decision through Twitter.

Both of them came down heavily on this decision to honour a 'fraud' like Chatwal who was chargesheeted by the CBI for an alleged US$ 9 million fraud case related to the State Bank of India. Using Twitter as the medium to spread awareness about this, Pritish Nandy (@PritishNandy) and Vir Sanghvi (@virsanghvi) have now decided to jointly write to Home Ministry for answering RTI queries asking where the recommendation of selecting Chetwal for Padma Bhushan came from.

It was Sanghvi who observed that it was "very strange to give Padma Bhushan to a man who has been accused of defrauding Indian banks and jailed by our government". Demanding a "more transparent" process of selecting the candidate, Sanghvi tweets, "We should demand a more transparent system so that crooks don't get awards and the people of India are treated with respect."

Pritish Nandy was soon to respond to this call as he tweets, "Lets RTI and find out who nominated Chatwal, the certified conman". He urged Sanghvi to sign the application that he will draft and speed post it to the concerned officer n the Home Ministry. While Sanghvi voiced for the involvement of an NGO and using Twitter to spread awareness, Nandy suggested Twitteratti to add all of them "as signatories" as they go along. In this way, he feels, "the application will gain far greater momentum."

Surekha Pillai (@surekhapillai), a communications consultant specialising in public affairs and a regular twitterer, took the initiative to spread the word among the Twitteratti and requested all to use hashtag chatwalRTI to discuss the RTI application to be filed by Vir Sanghvi & Pritish Nandy. The tweet got a considerable response with the Twitter users joining in discussions and showering their support on the probe demanded by the two veteran media personalities.
