New Delhi, April 13: This week Mapsofworld's Fry Day Poll delves into a debatable topic- "Should Prostitution Be Legalized?" Considered the oldest profession in the world, prostitution has been legalized in countries like Argentina, Armenia, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Belgium Denmark, Italy, Portugal, and Peru. But in countries like Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, Egypt, Pakistan, and Zimbabwe, it is still considered to be a criminal offense. In some of the Asian countries like India, Nepal and Bangladesh prostitution is restricted.
Those in favor of legalizing the prostitution feel it is necessary to stop child abuse, human trafficking, spread of STD and violence against sex workers. The Fry Day Poll throws open many questions like whether regulation of prostitution will be able to address health, social, and economic risks more effectively. What should be the process if there is a common consensus that prostitution be legalized? Should the countries adopt their own personalized solutions or there is a possibility of a global solution?
