| New Delhi, July 16: Think twice before you decide to thrash your kid for your one impulsive act may land you behind the bars. If recent reports are to be believed, the government is mulling a legislation to tag corporal punishment to a child as offence for parents, close relations and friends.
Earlier, the legislation was planned only for educational institutions and care givers.
India may soon follow the footsteps of US which allows children to take parents or near relations to court for the act of cruelty towards them.
The punishment proposed for the first offence is either a fine of Rs 5,000 or one year imprisonment. The punishment can be further raised to three years' imprisonment in case of second offence and the accused will have to pay a fine of Rs 25,000.
Presently, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has issued guidelines, which are the only major factors against corporal punishment.
In the forthcoming monsoon session the proposed Prevention of Offences against Child Bill 2009 is likely to be presented. The credit goes to Women and child development (WCD) ministry for taking the initiative.
According to WCD minister Krishna Tirath, the draft bill calls for punishment for those who deliberately inflicts physical pain on a child on disciplinary grounds.
Ragging will also be included under the proposed legislation. |
