Government ticked off for not contesting ruling on homosexuals |

| New Delhi: The Supreme Court today ticked off the Union government for its failure to challenge the Delhi High Court's verdict legalising homosexual acts between consenting adults in private.
"This court is meant for deciding important questions of constitution and fundamental rights. You do not file appeals on such important issues. You did not file the appeal against the Delhi High Court verdict on gay sex. But you come here on petty issues," remarked a bench of Justice Markandey katju and Justice A.K. Patnaik.
The court rebuked the government while dismissing its appeal against a high court ruling granting an increment in pension to retired railway employee R. Burdee.
"What's your problem if a retired employee is directed an increment? Is this the way the Union of India behaves?" the bench remarked.
The bench headed by Justice Katju disapproved of the government failure to challenge the gay sex verdict despite a different bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan hearing a bunch of appeals by private parties against the gay sex verdict of the high court. (IANS) |
