| Lucknow: A professor of the Aligarh Muslim University has been suspended owing to his sexual orientation. The professor was already about to retire. The incident occurred when a couple of students obtained video evidence of the particular professor indulging in consensual love making with a rickshaw puller at his official residence. The professor, Dr. Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras, is the chairman and a reader of the Modern Indian Languages with the AMU. He has stated that he would not be contesting his suspension and take the option of a voluntary leave.
The higher authorities at the Aligarh Muslim University have expressed their relief at the decision of Siras. They said this provides them the opportunity to do away with an episode that they have termed embarrassing. They are aware of the fact that the entire incident of suspension could have serious ramifications as far as gay rights issues within the college campus are concerned. The professor though was not accused of a criminal offence as what he did was not a wrongdoing of any sort.
The public relations officer of the Aligarh Muslim University, Rahat Abrar, said that Siras has been caught in the act and that is something that cannot be neglected by a famous institute as theirs. As such he had been suspended on 9th February as per the direction of the Vice Chancellor, Professor P K Abdul Azis. |
