| Jaipur: Rajasthan government has finally given its nod to legalize child marriages registration. This verdict has led to a huge argument in the nation. Social activists remarked that by allowing child marriage registration, the government is indirectly campaigning for this illegal social evil rather than preventing it.
Today more than 68 percent girls in Rajasthan are getting married before they attain 18 years of age. To add to the misery the government is now aiming to get all these marriages registered so as to publicly promote child marriages.
Home Minister of Rajasthan Shanti Dhariwal said that marriage registration is a must whether it is in case of adults or children. In case of a child marriage, if a baby is born later and any of his/her parent dies, then the child will have to face lots of humiliations in the society since his/her parents marriage is not registered legally.
He also said that in case the husband dies then the wife will not be able to claim over his assets and properties since she will not have any legal proof of marriage. She may have to suffer lots of social oppressions. So to prevent it, the state government has given its approval for registering child marriage. However many women activists have opposed this act as they said that the government is itself violating the ban it imposed on child marriage years ago by taking such a decision. |
