| Mumbai: A recent UNICEF Report has come up with a shocking revelation. India has more than one third of the world's total child brides. At a time when advancement in technology and thoughts seem to touch Indian shores, such a revelation calls for concern.
As per as the statistics goes, around 25 million women in India got married in the year 2007 by the time they attain the age of 18. The report further observed that the facts reflect a poignant truth that children in India, Nepal and Pakistan are married before they even turn 10. This leads to the increasing risk of exploitation on the children.
While stating how millions of children in the country are forced to work in harmful conditions and compelled to face domestic and outside violence, UNICEF Executive Director Ann Veneman, stated that it is not possible for a society to prosper if the youngest members are robbed off their basic rights.
It is to be noted that more than half the world's child brides are in south Asia, and they contribute for more than half the unregistered births. India ranks second when it comes to have the percentage (with 41%) of childbirths registered.
Child trafficking is widespread within Bangladesh and India that impedes these youngest members of the society to attend school or have access to even basic health-care. |
