Apex court seeks steps to prevent kids from falling into borwells |

| New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday issued notices to four states for details of measures they have undertaken to prevent children from falling into deep and narrow open borewells in rural areas.
A bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justice P. Sathasivam sought details from Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, treating a letter sent to it as a public interest lawsuit.
The letter was written in the wake of several incidents of small children falling and dying in the borewells, dug in rural areas for irrigation.
These incidents included one last October when a two-year-old Sonu fell in a 150-foot deep narrow pit in his village near Agra in Uttar Pradesh.
All efforts to save Sonu failed and his body could be taken out of the borewell only five days later.
Similarly, in mid-2006 Prince of Kurukshetra district in Haryana fell into a deep borewell and could be saved only after days of combined efforts of the army and the police personnel.
Issuing the notices to the four states where such incidents have recurred, the apex court sought their replies within four weeks.(IANS) |
