12 lakh child labourers employed in different sectors: Govt

New Delhi: More than 12 lakh child labourers are employed in different sectors, which include glass and fireworks industry. Labour Minister Mallikarjun Kharge informed the Rajya Sabha about the ordeal of these child labourers who also had to work in hazardous industries.

Out of the 12 lakh children, more than 1, 85,500 children were employed as domestic workers and about 1, 29,000 child labourers were employed in the construction sector.

Informing the members of the upper house during Question Hour, the Minister added that Nearly 71,000 children were working in roadside eateries and about 25,000 in small shops.

According to the 2001 census and NSSO figures, little less than 32,500 children were employed in carpet factories, which come under the category of hazardous industries.

The Minister further added that more than 14,300 people have been prosecuted in the last five years for their violation of the Child Labour Act and around 1,000 people have been convicted. The act prohibits any form of employment of children below the age of 14.
