Kolkata, May 24: The Samajwadi Party on Sunday offered to provide issue-based support to the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government if it removed the Trinamool Congress from its fold. Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav confirmed that his party has already given such a proposal to the UPA-II. "Yes, it is true. But we have offered issue-based support".

The Samajwadi Party chief said his party has been opposing the anti-people policies of the central dispensation in the Lok Sabha, but was prepared to provide support if there was consensus on issues concerning national security, plight of farmers and price rise to check the communal forces.

On the Maoist issue, Mulayam Singh said some of the demands of the left extremist group were justified and the government should initiate talks with them.

"This problem cannot be solved by the mere use of force. Some of their demands are justified. We should talk to them," he said.

He criticised the UPA government for not convening an all party meeting to find a solution to the Maoist problem. (IANS)
