| Mumbai/Delhi: Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray has distanced himself from millions of Indians by criticising Sachin Tendulkar for having said that Mumbai belongs to each and every Indian.
Sachin is a national icon and one of the favorite sons of Maharashtra. Thackeray even said in an editorial that he wrote in Saamna, the mouthpiece of Shiv Sena, that it would be in the best interest of Sachin to not worry about the political side of things.
Apparently there is a game of political one-upmanship going on between the two Thackerays - Raj and Bal - in order to show who is the bigger champion of the cause of Maharashtra. This article is a part of that political tussle.
However, this particular piece has been unequivocally rejected as one unworthy of attention from all quarters of Maharashtra intelligentsia and society. As aptly put by the Maharashtra CM, Ashok Chavan this uncalled for tirade against India's leading batsman has actually united the nation.
In his article on Sachin, Thackeray urged him not to forget the rights of the common folk of Maharashtra. He said that Tendulkar should refrain from politics lest he might lose his cricketing credentials. He termed it as an affectionate caution of sorts.
Bal Thackeray's comments have drawn the ire of prominent political figures like Lalu Prasad and Manish Tiwari. On the other hand, Sachin has been hailed by Arun Jaitley and Nitish Kumar for upholding the truest Indian virtues. |
