| Mumbai: Abu Asim Azmi, the MLA of the Samajwadi Party from Maharashtra hit the headlines a couple of days ago after he was slapped for taking his oath in Hindi by the MLAs of the Maharashtra Nava Nirman Sena. Now he faces a situation with the all-powerful Shiv Sena following his statements regarding its supremo Balasaheb Thackeray.
While replying to an editorial on him in Saamna, the mouth piece of Shiv Sena, he had said that Balasaheb was getting on in years and had started to behave in a way that was not exactly rational. This comment seemed enough to attract the ire of the prominent names of the party.
He was encircled by a couple of MLAs of the Shiv Sena even as he was going out of the assembly. Eknath Shinde, who is the MLA of the party from Thane, headed the party that was demonstrating against the MLA, for making what they considered disparaging remarks about a prominent political individual in Maharashtra.
Shinde said that they had confronted Azmi and demanded explanation for his statements. He reiterated that they have also issued a warning to the MLA regarding making such insulting statements against a leader of Balasahebs stature.
It is believed that Azmi was chastened by the experience and has assured the agitators that he never meant these remarks as an insult to Balasaheb. He said that he has already been receiving threatening phone calls asking him to refrain from speaking against Balasaheb. He also said that he would talk to RR Patil regarding upgradation of his security as his Colaba showroom had been attacked. |
