New Delhi: Following continuous adjournments of the Rajya Sabha, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today called an all-party meeting to work out modalities of passing a historic Women's Reservation Bill that was moved in the house earlier in the day. After much ruckus in the parliament over the bill it has been decided that the voting will take place on Tuesday. The BJP and UPA allies would like to have a debate before the voting on the Bill. Earlier, both the Houses of Parliament were adjourned four times with the Samajwadi Party and the RJD declaring their decision to withdraw support from the UPA.
Moreover, members of the Samajwadi Party tore up copies of the women's bill and hurled them at Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari.
The meeting comes against the backdrop of severe opposition by members of the Rashtriya Janata Dal, Samajwadi Party and Lok Janshakti Party. The MPs from these parties forced five adjournments of the Rajya Sabha. (IANS) |
