New Delhi, May 25: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has strongly negated suggestions that the United Progressive Alliance had been using the Central Bureau of Investigation against the political opponents.

While talking to the media at a press conference Manmohan stated emphatically that the CBI was a political tool at the hands of the UPA that they were employing to make sure that their opposite numbers were forced into complying with them.

He asked the media to do away with any misconception they might have had regarding the federal investigative agency of India being used by them for garnering political submission from their adversaries.

He said that there was no deal with the CBI when the media enquired if such a partnership was struck to procure support from the Bahujan Samaj Party in order to tide over the cut motions brought about by opponents at the parliament. Incidentally, this support by the BSP was not expected at all.

The proponents of the cut motion had said that the BSP had supported UPA as the CBI had reached an agreement whereby it would have refrained from pursuing a case of disproportionate assets against the BSP supremo and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati. However, quashing such suggestions, Manmohan has stated that the CBI operates on its own and the government does not involve itself in its functioning.
