Left and Maoists are hand in glove: Mamata

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Monday accused West Bengal's ruling Left Front of being in cahoots with the Maoists saying the Communists had used the rebels to win the polls in the western districts.

"The Left used Maoists to rig the elections and now they are saying Maoists helped the Trinamool. (Prakash) Karat and (Sitaram) Yechury need to clear their stand on Maoists," Banerjee said, referring to the Communist Party of India-Marxist leaders.

"Messers Karat and Yechuri should expressly tell people whether Maoists in Nepal, whom they support, and the Maoists in West Bengal, against whom they are fighting, are anyway different ideologically," she asked addressing a gathering after a peace rally organised by her party workers here.

Pointing out that the Maoist-dominated zones of West Bengal are represented by Left lawmakers, she asked who had allowed the rebels to spread their influence.

The meeting ended abruptly after two party members fell sick due to the heat.

The West Bengal government has sent security forces to Lalgarh in West Midnapore district to flush out leftwing radicals who have declared it a "liberated" zone. (IANS)
