New Delhi: Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh today briefed party chief Sonia Gandhi about his visit to Uttar Pradesh's Azamgarh where he received petitions from families of young men arrested on terrorism charges.

"I have submitted the report to the party president," Singh, who was accompanied by the party's Uttar Pradesh unit chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi, told reporters.

He said Azamgarh has "got a bad name" and had been dubbed "a nursery of terrorism", and his party wanted to clear Azamgarh's image and see that innocent people were not harassed.

Singh, who visited Azamgarh last week on a "fact-finding" mission, suggested on Monday that special courts should be set up to fast-track terrorism cases involving the town's young men.

He said there should be free, fair and speedy trial in cases faced by the youth.

Singh had generated some controversy over his alleged remarks questioning the 2008 Batla House shootout in Delhi. However, the Congress general secretary denied making any such remarks. (IANS)
