| New Delhi, Aug 16: In what could be a major cause of worry for the Congress party, the facts revealed by the Central Election Authority Chairman clearly state that the party membership has come down to only over 2.9 crore as against 4 crore earlier.
The reason cited for such a substantial fall in the membership is the party's stringent rules regarding photo-identity cards. Congress has not allowed any bogus members or the ones who have failed to produce such identity cards.
Congress, the oldest political party in India will complete 125 years this year.
The membership count was also declared after the Congress Working Committee meeting here, which finalized the schedule for the party chief's election.
The party general secretary Janardan Dwivedi also informed the reporters after the meeting that seven lakh booth committees have been made. |
