Administrative glitch forces Rajya Sabha adjournment

New Delhi: An administrative glitch forced a 10-minute adjournment of the Rajya Sabha today after AIADMK members took umbrage over the manner in which their notice for a discussion on last week's clashes between lawyers and police in Chennai had been handled. AIADMK members pointed out that a notice that had been served for Wednesday was listed for today, while that served for today had not been listed at all.

As Mps from the Left and the Communist Party of India-Marxist joined in the protests, Deputy Chairman K. Rahman Khan pleaded in vain for calm, at one stage, remarking in anguish: "I am deeply pained."

Failing to restore order, Khan then adjourned the house at 12.26 p.m. For 10 minutes.

The house functioned normally when it resumed. (IANS)
