The Nuclear Liability Bill will be tabled today in the Lok Sabha
New Delhi: Indian Parliament may expect another session today when the Nuclear Liability Bill will be tabled today in the Lok Sabha. The bill, which aims at setting a fixed liability in case of a nuclear accident occurs, has received much opposition from the the Left and the BJP. They have vehemently opposed this bill. According to the sources in the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), the Indian operator NPCIL is liable to pay Rs 500 crores in case of any nuclear accident. The bill states that the the government of India will be liable to pay compensation beyond that till Rs 2133 crores.

Moreover, the bill also states that foreign suppliers of nuclear reactors will not have to pay in case of the accident. However, the supplier can be asked for penalty if they are found to have supplied poor quality of equipment.

The political parties have started to raise their voice against the bill with the Left tagging it as harmful. According to the Left party, the legislation will serve the interests of the United States and demands immediate scrapping of the bill.
