Meira Kumar to attend IPU meet in Bangkok

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar to attend the assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union
New Delhi: A high-level Indian parliamentary delegation led by Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar will leave for Bangkok today to attend 122nd assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) to be held between March 27-April 1.

"The assembly will hold a general debate on the political, economic and social situation in the world with reference to the overall theme of 'Parliament at the heart of political reconciliation and good governance'," said a release issued by the Lok Sabha secretariat on Thursday.

The agenda of the assembly will focus on various subjects including cooperation in fight against organised crime, drug trafficking, illegal arms sales, human trafficking,cross-border terrorism, and role of parliaments in developing South-South and Triangular Cooperation with a view to accelerating achievement of the millennium development goals.

Meira Kumar, who is at present the chairperson of the Asia Pacific Geo-political Group (APG) of the IPU, will chair the meeting of the group on March 27 in Bangkok. The group consists of 27 member-countries from the Asia-Pacific Region.

"The meeting of the APG countries will work out a common strategy on the agenda items which would best suit their region," said the release.

MPs S.S. Ahluwalia, Kunwar Rewati Raman Singh, Yashodhara Raje Scindia, Mohammed Azharuddin, Jesudasu Seelam, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and parliament officials are part of the delegation. (IANS)
