New Delhi: The whole country may be endlessly celebrating its first ever individual Olympics Gold medal, but the achievement could not convince M M A Fatmi, Minister of State for Human Resource Development, who termed the win by shooter Abhinav Bindra as a fluke and a personal achievement.
"We won a Gold by-chance. We cannot expect more medals at the international level with this infrastructure. There is no promotion for sports at the primary level in schools. If some Rathore (Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore) or Bindra (Abhinav Bindra) wins any medal, then it is by dint of their personal efforts and there is absolutely no contribution from our side," said Fatmi.
He was quite critical about the state of sports in the country where no basic facilities are provided at the school level. He said that some funds from the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan should also be diverted to provide sports facilities.
"China trains children from the age of 7-8 years and there is ample infrastructure at the school level. We should also make universalisation of sports facilities just like the Mid-day Meal scheme. I have been suggesting my senior colleagues that sport persons should be provided 20 per cent quota in jobs," Fatmi said and added that a country of billion people should not beg for a single medal. |
