Beijing: India's Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi crashed out of Beijing Olympics 2008 after losing in straight sets to the Swiss pair Roger Federer and Stanislas Warwinka in men's doubles tennis competition quarterfinal today. The fourth seeded Federer and Warwinka defeated the Indians, seeded seventh, 6-2, 6-4 at the Olympic Green Tennis Centre.
The match, started on Thursday, was subsequently called off following a slight drizzle, which grew in intensity and forced a stoppage in play after just 16 minutes during which Federer and Wawrinka broke the Indians once to run up a 4-1 lead. Paes and Bhupathi seemed shaky and gave too many points through unforced errors.
The win would certainly come as a reprieve of sorts for Federer, who was shocked in the singles' quarterfinals. He came into the doubles after being eliminated in straight sets by American James Blake, and looked much sharper than in the singles. (IANS) |
