'Ugli Aur Pagli' is a kind of movie that will make you go crazy asking question why such movies are thrust upon the innocent audience. It is an attempt to celebrate a different form of comedy with a very unusual lead pair- Ranvir Shorey and Mallika Sherawat. The movie establishes a female dominated master-slave relationship between the lead pair. Though it's tipped as a romantic comedy, the humour doesn't come across in the film.

Based loosely on a Korean film, 'My Sassy Girl', this is a story of Kabir (Ranvir Shorey), a looser who ends up falling in love with an aggressive and alcoholic Kuhu (Mallika Sherawat). The movie revolves around these two characters only. While Kabir is a soft spoken, middle class engineering student, who has seen four years sitting in the same class. On the contrary, Kuhu is always dominating and violent. What interests her the most is, writing futuristic scripts.

One day Kabir saves Kuhu's life and like typical thoughtless Bollywood movies, he is seen afterwards accompanying her throughout the film. Kuhu, having lost her boyfriend before, wants someone in life and what could be better to find a young man without making efforts. As destined, she falls into love with Kabir who agrees to do everything for her. As the tagline of the movie goes, '99 slaps and one kiss', Kuhu keeps slapping the boy for strange reasons all the time.

Well, 'Ugli Aur Pagli' is still a romantic comedy with dull stretch interspersed with forgettable enjoyable moments. The movie lacks the right combination of romance and comedy.

Thankfully, the acting part of the movie is better. Ranvir Shorey plays the idiot part perfectly in the film. Mallika looks hot and natural in her character. She has excelled in most of the emotional scenes. The chemistry between Ranvir and Mallika is quite intact. Zeenat Aman in her three minute-special appearance looks gorgeous. Vishal Malhotra is good in his tiny role.

Somak Mukherjee's cinematography is average. The first half is devoted totally to the couple and certainly there is an overdose of slavery. The second half is quite boring with the presence of a few emotional scenes. More than half of the film is wasted by showing Mallika giving orders and dares and Ranvir following them all.

The promos looked great but the film does not appear to be the same. The script is below average and the storyline is senseless. There seems less connectivity in different scenes of the film. It seems that the scene after every twenty minute is being repeated. Though slap sticky comedy is a new concept but the first time director, Sachin Khot, fails to impress his audience with his first venture itself.

The music by Anu Malik is a mixed bag. There are altogether four tracks in the movie and with different composition and unique style but without any meaning. The song 'Talli Ho Gayi' is full of masti and has become the most popular song of the film. It's a foot thumping number sung by Hard Kaur and Anu Malik's daughter Anmol Malik. The other song 'Karle Gunah' sung by Ishq Bector is average in lyrics but music would set the dance floor on fire. The remaining two songs, 'Shut Up Aa Nachle' and 'Yaad Teri Aayi' are just okay. Overall, the songs do not have the quality to make it to the chartbusters.

In a nutshell, as the name suggests, 'Ugli Aur Pagli' lives up to it's name as there is an Ugly and a Pagli in the movie and you have the option of watching just these two. The movie as a whole is a major disappointment. It's just the brilliant performance by Ranvir and Mallika which kept me hold the seat. Otherwise, it's hard to sit through this slap stick comedy. But at the end of the day, it's the audience who would decide whether debutant director's luck will shine or not at the box office.
