Movie Review (Posted on: April 15, 2009)
Life comes with a package of uncertainties and they strike deepest at the time when we expect it the least. This is perhaps the very crux of director Nagesh Kukunoor’s film Tasveer. Different from his other films like Dor and Iqbal, this new production is a thriller with the toppings spread unevenly. Akshay Kumar, the protagonist and the past-teller in the movie is bestowed with an ability to peep into the past through photographs. This is the cause of trouble and also the means to achieve his errand, which constitutes the whole story.
Akshay Kumar, the forest ranger in the Calgary region of Canada, shows off his undying spirit in the very first scene with his commendable effort of diving deep to find an evidence of crime. The same spirit lingers on throughout the movie as he undertakes a series of risky ventures to find out, the real culprit behind the death of his father. Sharmila Tagore, is as elegant as ever, with loads of secrets pent up within her – and not without a reason. Ayesha Takia, the love of Akshay’s life, did not have much to do in the beginning but later she appeared a more seasoned actor moulded into a character required of her.

This suspense thriller follows the hackneyed bollywood strategy of imposing one event on another to create a never-ending hangover. From the moment Javed Jaffrey appears in the movie as a detective and acted as the initiator to investigate Jatin’s (Akshay’s father) death till everything came out of the secret box. Javed Jaffrey did a fair job as a constant aid of Akshay with a style of his own. The story, penned by the director, suffers from some common sub-plots and you cannot escape the smell of monotony. It is tiring at times to watch the repeated acts of Akshay Kumar to delve into a single photograph and find out the past.
Except the repetitive tendency, Tasveer offers you a fair share of thrill with our Akki doing most of the running. He has proved himself once again as one of the most athletic and fittest dudes bollywood is blessed with. Music directors Salim Merchant, Sulaiman Merchant and Neeraj Sri have put up a visible effort with their pulsating background music. Even Bohemia (English rapper) was impressive with his song ‘What’s in the picture’. You get to see some fast changing scenes in the film thanks to high-end camera techniques implemented in some of the shots. Beautiful landscapes of Canada’s countryside are captured well to evoke an aesthetic appeal. Covering a span of two hours and 15 minutes, Tasveer strives to impress you with a hard-to-believe story and succeeds to certain yards.
