Short Kut Review
Movie Review
(Posted on: July 13, 2009)

There is no short cut to success. This holds true even in the execution of the script. Short Kut, which was promoted as a comical entertainer, lives up to its expectation in the first half, to some extent. The comical sequences are not slapstick but situational. But the second half, especially the climax was as disastrous as it could get.

Starting on a promising note this Hindi remake of Malayalam movie comically displays the struggle of Shekhar(Akshay Khanna) and Raju(Arshad Warsi), in the Mumbai city, failed to make an impact. While Raju reach the heights of super stardom after stealing a script, Shekhar's struggle continues, especially after his script gets stolen. The twist in the tale comes when fate brings the two characters, who share different philosophies on lives, together yet again. The situation takes another turn when Mansi (Amrita), a leading actress marries Akshaye Khanna (who plays a writer cum director), but incidentally gets involved with Arshad.

Short Kut ReviewExcept the good performances delivered by both Akshay and Arshad and funny punchlines, the film has very little to offer. As a bad guy, Warsi casts humor quotient in the movie. His role is integral to the film and deserves a huge round of applause. Akshay, an immensely talented yet under-rated star, could have been more careful while choosing a role that can explore his acting prowess. And talking about the glam quotient in the movie, all kudos goes to Aki Narula, Ameira Punvan and Manish Malhotra, for making the leading lady, Amrita Rao, look classy. All her fans would be super surprised to see her donning a ultra chic look. Besides that her role was too short to comment on.
Short Kut Review

The storyline of Short Kut had different shades followed by fast paced situations generating flippancy. Ego clashes topples the plot. But the movie fails in its execution and in the deliberate attempt to make the climax unconventional, which instead turned out to be confusing and disgusting. There is nothing exceptional about the cinematography, except the beautiful display of Thailand locales in few songs. The musical score by Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy, is about average. Watch out for the “Mareeje Mohabbat” song which witnesses Sanjay Dutt and Anil Kapoor shaking legs with Amrita Rao.

Kirron Kher, Javed Jaffery and Boman Irani pops up in between to add zing Bosco Caeser, has done a good job, but somewhere the choreography was too naive and wanting in punk. Since the movie focusses on the rise and fall of a character and the dirty tricks which people play to enter the world of stardom, the direction could have been better if the director stuck to making it a dark comedy.
