Movie Review (Posted on: Feb 02, 2010)
The moment you show more concern on how to 'present' news before the people, you actually start creating news. Ram Gopal Verma's venture Rann seems to portray this same fact. The film is about a series of battles raged between ethics and business policy, conscience and power, father and son and also between two media houses. These factors are battling simultaneously to find an answer to the long raised question – News for the sake of truth or news for the sake of public demand.

Vijay Harshvardhan Malik (read Amitabh Bachchan), who advocates the idea of honest journalism is a hard nut to crack when it comes to lure him with falsification. He is not someone who is in the race to increase TRP of its channel and fabricate news for the 'greater purpose' of winning awards.
His son Jay Malik (Sudeep) is of another constitution. He is more of a ready-to-do-anything guy and a self-claimed media personality, who resorts to the advices of his jiju (brother-in-law) Rajat Kapoor and a tainted politician played by Paresh Rawal. If on the one side Vijay is bent upon to see his father's venture India 24x7 going big, on the flip side it is the ulterior motive of the other two to reach the heights to power.
Malik learns the other facet of modern-day journalism – presenting news in a way as if it is the sole truth. He nurtures himself into a 'seasoned' media-man ready to 'create' truthful news. But he does have someone watching his moves. Purab (Ritesh Deshmukh), a promising investigative journalist, manages to get a job in India 24x7. His inquisitive mind and on-the face attitude attract the attention of the audience and he comes in as an interesting entrant in the plot.
Ritesh becomes the opposing force for the nexus formed between Jay Malik, industrialist Rajat Kapoor and politician Paresh Rawal. A series of events overlap with many parting with conscience and 'foolishness' to reach a mutually beneficial end. Revelations after revelations bring out the unnerving truth and Vijay Harshvardhan Malik realizes that money and news have interchanged their places. News has now just become the medium for the media to churn out more money.
While Mohnish Behl plays a shrewd contriver switching sides for the sake of earning big, Gul Panag puts up a fair effort in portraying a happy-go-lucky assistant ad-director and a concerned girl friend of Purab. Rajpal Yadav has his share of screen presence to make the mood lighter with his nonchalant comic moves. Watch out for the 8-minute long soliloquy of Amitabh Bachchan, some unconventional songs (although very less as per Bollywood standard), novel cinematography and events that flow at a breakneck pace. Ignore the hyperboles in the film, if any.
