Movie Review (Posted on: June 20, 2009)
Disguises and mistaken identities are widely chosen themes for the comedy makers and we are gifted with some excellent comedies that exploited these themes to perfection. Paritosh Painter's directorial debut 'Paying Guest' is nowhere to be seen in the light of Bollywood's loved comedies. Bringing a whole lot of actors under one banner does not always strike the right chord, and Paying Guest is a glaring instance. The story revolves around four buddies living in Bangkok and trying hard to settle comfortably in their life. The first hurdle towards achieving their aim is the lack of proper shelter. Johny Lever, comes to their resort and accepts them as his paying guests. But, there is a hitch. He will allow only married couples as paying guests.
The actual journey of the movie begins now with Shreyas Talpade and Javed Jaffrey started to groom themselves as wives of Vatsal Sheth and Ashish Chowdhry. Javed Jaffrey completely metamorphosed himself as a lady and he carried himself very much like one. There had been some funny moments in the movie when four of them started living in Johny Lever's house. While Riya Sen was impressive with her role of a soft and hyper-sensitive girl, Neha Dhupia tried well to fit into the character assigned to her. Chunky Pandey, the hated brother of Johny Lever has got a new look in the film and he manages to put up fairly a satisfactory show with his performance as a rogue.

Amidst the series of confusions and humdrum, the story moves on with characters overdoing in various instances. Paritossh Painter, who had written the script of another comedy Dhamaal, did not quite exploit his resources in Paying Guest. He pens down a monotonous script and applies a hackneyed technique to evoke laughter among his audience. Some admiration must be kept aside for the complete unit of cinematography for taking some good shots of Thailand and reflecting the vibrant flavour of Bangkok.
Exaggeration and repetition of similar situations abound in the movie, which hardly add to its appeal. Chic locales and colourful outfits do create a sense of utopia, but that does not linger for long as not-so-witty dialogues and predictable situations mar the charm. Songs like Jack and Jill and Namkeen are tolerable with not much experimentation done in choreography. One has to be choosy while handling almost saturated themes like mistaken identities. Bollywood's target audience have matured much and
they don't accept movies without any difference. If you do not find reasons enough to laugh in the movie Paying Guests, you always have the option to laugh at it.
