Movie Review (Posted on: Feb 15, 2010)
He can repair anything, almost anything. Rizwan Khan (Khan should be pronounced from epiglottis) can repair a broken knee and lend out a helping hand to the victims of hurricane with equal ease. Rizwan himself a victim of Asperger's syndrome, overpowers his weakness and ventures out on a mission to show it on the face of the world that religion has got nothing to do with terrorism.

The protagonist of the film prefers almost a reclusive life thanks to his antipathy towards noise and strangers but he is not afraid to say it aloud that ‘My Name is Khan’, and ‘I am not a terrorist’. He is ready to reveal his actual identity before the ones who raise eyebrows at the name of Islam. My Name is Khan is a paradigm shift from director Karan Johar’s earlier films as you get to see the entrance of an entirely a different subject, and obviously a grave one.
Mandira’s (Kajol) character grows with Rizwan as she metamorphoses into a loving partner and a wife from just being a single struggling mother. It is the unconditional love of Rizwan for her and the husband element in him that brought fresh air in her life – and the family starts basking in the newly found happiness.
Just when their cup of happiness was full a series of unexpected events jogged their elbows leaving them completely devastated. Terror attack in the US turned people into sworn enemies of the Muslims as they start equating terrorism with Islam. Contempt continued to breed till a point when Rizwan encounters the scarred face of the society and its mindless vindication.
We find the gritty and determined individual who wants to purge the society of its maladies and since he belonged to the ‘good man’ group he strictly believes in the words of Quran – killing a person actually kills the humanity. The film transcends beyond an individual’s struggle to win back his love and touches a host of other ancillary issues plaguing world peace.
Tension dominates the major span of the film with some dollops of fun and SRK’s long known wit. Not-so-cluttered script did it for the film with sensitive highs complementing the package. Except some repeated mannerisms, Shah Rukh did fairly well to live his character. Kajol is as effervescent as ever with her jovial (although bit loud for Rizwan) laughter and unfailing expressions.
Jimmy Shergill and Zarina Wahab fit in well with their characters and Vinay Pathak’s cameo role is also no less impressive. Music could not make a major scratch although songs like Tere Naina and Allah Hi Rahem filled the spaces in between the transitory stages. Impressive cinematography by Ravi K. Chandran did create an appealing canvas of the film with quite a fresh play of light and darkness. Had it not been for the additional sub-plots that rolled the film for more than two and half hours, My Name is Khan could have been close to a flawless creation.
