'Maan Gaye Mughall-E-Azam' is a kind of movie which is packed with so many things- from a love triangle, patriotism, terrorism to the theatre group's woes- that it leaves the audience confused and bored. Director Sanjay Chhel, who has earlier directed movies like Khoobsurat and Kyaa Dil Ne Kaha, this time comes out with a mindless comedy. It seems that he is inspired by 'Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro' but he could not produce the magic of the original.

The story revolves around a group of self-indulgent actors of a Kalakar Theatre Company. They have just one play, Mughal-e-Azam to stage whenever they think of a performance. Somehow an RAW agent, Arjun (Rahul Bose) falls in love with the lead actress of the play, Shabnam (Mallika Sherawat), who is married to Uday Shankar Mazumdar (Paresh Rawal). Here comes the changing chemistry of the movie because there is a secret agent, a husband of the woman loved by the agent, and there is a singer, Haldi Hassan, (Kay Kay Menon) from underworld.

When Arjun gets to know about Haldi Hassan's Jehadi face, he vows to expose his dangerous design. But even the police and the local gangster get after him. So what's next? There the story takes a turn as the theatre group finds out that Arjun is a cop on mission. In turn, Arjun seeks their help in tackling the underworld don, who is planning a bomb blast in the city. And the drama company gets into the act. The second half of the movie is all about how the members of the drama company help in Arjun's mission and save the country from the tremors of the bomb blasts.

Despite a non-interesting package, the movie has commendable performances of Paresh Rawal, Mallika Sherawat and Rahul Bose- it's business as usual. The chemistry between the trio is fantastic. Paresh's mastery over making people laugh is unmatched. Watch him as Akbar or Kay Kay's double. Mallika stands good as Anarkali and later, as an aspiring actress. She flaunts her most natural possession as much as she could have in the film. Rahul Bose, is surprise comedy product of the film. His timing is perfect even in comedy scenes. Kay Kay is fine in his tiny role. Surprisingly, Pawan Malhotra does very well. Zakir Hussain and Tanaaz don't get much to do. Manoj Joshi is wasted.

Humour is the highpoint of 'Maan Gaye Mughall-E-Azam' and the dialogues too. Anu Malik's music is lifeless. The title track, 'Maan Gaye Mughall-E-Azam' is a remix of 'Jab Pyaar Kia toh darna kya' which is the only song good to ear. 'Marmari Baahen' is a romantic track sung by Shaan and Mahalakshmi Iyer. But, it is an average number and the remaining songs are simply add-ons. Altogether the music lets the movie down. Madhu Ambat's cinematography is fair.

In a nutshell, Maan Gaye Mughall-E-Azam is an average flcik, though it has patches of humour. But, the movie is clearly erratic and inconsistent. So much is tucked into one movie that it's hard to digest all simultaneously. I don't think there is any place for this movie at the box-office. Maan Gaye Mughall-E-Azam belongs to Paresh, Rahul and Mallika, I would say, if I am pushed to say something on the movie.
