After five long years, veteran director Aziz Mirza makes a comeback on the silver screen with a romantic comedy, Kismat Konnection. Shot in the soothing locations of Toronto, the movie is based on the importance of destiny in the life of an individual. With a RomCom genre, the movie has an ordinary storyline, which also seems to be similar to his earlier films. Though Mirza's favourite Shahrukh and Juhi Chawla are not seen in the lead but yes, you happen to see Juhi in a special appearance and feel Shahrukh's presence in Shahid's looks, performance, body language and dialogue delivery.

This is a story of a university topper, Raj Malhotra, who is still jobless (after five years) and struggling for his first break as an architect. There seems to be something wrong with his Kismat that whenever something good is about to happen, it fails to happen without taking time. Perhaps, somehow luck isn't favoring him.

Desperate to fight his negative Kismat, he meets a fortune teller, Haseena Bano Jaan (Juhi Chawla). She tells him that soon his stars will change and make everything work in his favour.

Here enters Priya (Vidya Balan), who happens to be his lucky mascot, as in her presence even impossible things turn possible. She is a social activist, who ends up playing the same character as in her earlier film Lage Raho Munna Bhai. Things seem to be going quite right, but how would one identify that it's a typical Bollywood drama. Well, when on one side Raj gets his dream contract with Gill (Om Puri ) for the construction of a shopping mall, parallel to that, Priya is fighting for the survival of a community centre which is a home to several senior citizens. To know what happens next, you guys need to spend a little.

Well, Kismat Konnection is a light hearted romantic comedy intercepted by some dull moments. Unlike Aziz Mirza's previous movies like Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Yes Boss and Chalte Chalte which had the right combination of romance and comedy, Kismat Konnection lacks both. Also, there are many loopholes in the story, as to how come a struggling architect and a loner have a lavish furnished house in Canada, a car along with an LCD Television, and the best brand clothes to wear. Not bad for a struggler, eh?

On the performance front, Shahid succeeds in playing a prefect duplicate to Shahrukh Khan. Vidya Balan looks hot and has played her part perfectly. But these two as a couple fail to impress the audience. Gorgeous Juhi Chawla as a fortune-teller is brilliant in a special appearance. Vishal Malhotra is great. Om Puri is good. Himani Shivpuri as Om Puri's dominating wife in her Punjabi accent is hard to digest. Boman Irani's five minute special appearance has been totally wasted in the movie.

Binod Pradhan's cinematography is average. The first half has a few enjoyable moments with some punchy dialogues but the second half is highly boring. More than half of the film is wasted by showing Raj's repeated attempts to win the construction contract. The series of scenes seem unplugged and dis(k)onnected. It is hard to sit through this three hour long movie.

The promos looked great but the film does not appear to be the same. The script is below average this time. There seems less connectivity between different scenes of the film. Many of the scenes similar to his earlier films. In fact, the base of all his movies seems to be identical. For example, Shahrukh was seen as a struggler and an ambitious boy in his movies Yes Boss and Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman. Similarly, Shahid is an ambitious boy struggling for his big break in Kismat Konnection. There is nothing new I guess! Mirza fails to impress his audience this time.

The music by Pritam Chakraborty is a mixed bag. The title song ' Tu hai meri soniye' is full of masti. Another song 'Bakhuda Tumhi ho' sung by Atif Aslam and Alka Yagnik is quite romantic and has become the most popular song of the film. The other song 'Soniye Ve' is just average. Next comes, 'Move your body now'. It's a hip hop and a foot thumping number. Overall, the music of Kismat Konnection is average.

At the end of the day, it's the audience who would decide whether Mirza's Kismat will shine or not at the box office. Or else, as the movie goes, he may be needing some lady luck!
