Movie Review (Posted on: July 13, 2009)
Vishal Bharadwaj has one again pulled in a stunner.. and this time he delves deep into the psyche of individuals and dig out their kaminapan, which otherwise remains under the garb of their bholapan.
Guddu and Charlie (the twin brothers played by shahid) are just two sides of a coin differing very much in their mettle. While Charlie has heavy shades of rascality in him, his brother Guddu is a pitiable character, a loser and a timid individual who can indulge in conjugal highs with his love Sweety (Priyanka Chopra) but does not have the spine to bear its consequences. Priyanka, on the other hand assumes the role of a supporting partner protective his cute Guddu from his “stammering destiny”.
Apparently, Kaminey is a story of two different brothers who had turned sworn enemies following a sad past and the humiliating death of their father. This creative venture has lot to offer as you peel of every layer and peep inside the plot and the characters revolving around it. The director has been meticulous in attributing proper looks to the actors and that has really helped his cause. Be it the roguish look of Charlie the baddie or a zero makeup look of Priyanka Chopra, all have perfectly blended with the rich aroma of the movie.

If it is exciting to watch the indomitable desires of Charlie to rise high (almost like a spiderman) taking the 'chhota' short cut, it is equally interesting to see his brother Guddu with his lingering sense of inferiority and unmanly retreats. If Charlie has his share of kaminapan in him, then his brother Guddu, a rather suave version, is no less kamina either. A revelation dawned on Charlie when he realized that even his desires and his dreams have smell of rascality in them (thanks to the beautiful lyrics penned by our Gulzar Saab). Shahid deserves kudos for his intense involvement with the characters, his timely stammering and the energetic presence. Admiration must be kept aside for Priyanka too, she is both tender and stubborn at the same time .. and excels in her role of a simple and caring girl, who knows how to fight back.
The story of the gangsters and their oddities are portrayed in a novel fashion. It is a different experience altogether to watch these gaucky and eccentric people engaged in brainstorming conversation. The rude yet strikingly witty dialogues coming out of their rustic mouths are a treat to hear. The battle over cocaine worth millions of dollars is the outer shell under which script cooks a delicious saga of relationship, human fallacies, intolerance, discrimination and excess craving for power and fame. Kaminey is cosmopolitan in its appeal with the clever use of different languages and characters of different geography in the story.

Hats off to the the complete camera unit for their exceptionally well taken shots and using rainfall to a lucrative extent. The series of chasing and encounters in the movie are duly supported by thumping background music. Listening to the song 'aa dil nichore' is like reading the character of Charlie. The story is given a nail-biting finish with conflict reaching a colossal height. It will keep you glued to your seat. If you want to watch something poignant and real then Kaminey will not disappoint you. If not for the of the stinginess of the characters, watch it for its uncompromising execution and brutal portrayal of human intricacies.
