Videsh – Heaven on Earth Preview

‘Videsh’ is the upcoming movie of Deepa Mehta starring Preity Zinta and Vansh Bhardwaj and host of other talented actors. This Indian-born Canadian director had earlier created some out of the box movies that were tagged as unconventional. Her new movie Videsh concerns about a young woman, Chand. Preity Zinta wanted to build a new life out form India and thus she leaves behind her family behind and moves to Ontario in Canada. There she marries Rocky (Vansh Bhardwaj), a man whom she has never met. This is the debut film for Vansh who is actively involved in theatre for 16 long years. It is certainly a dream debut for him with Deepa Mehta as his director and moreover, he will be sharing screen with Preity Zinta.

Vansh’s role as Rocky is very challenging as the burden of his parents, sister and her family was too much for him to bear. His anger and frustration continues to grow and his meager income was making the matter worse. Being a cab driver, it was difficult for him to sustain the extended family and his wife Chand has to tolerate his tantrums and the violent vent to his frustrations. Being an educated and intelligent woman, Chand cannot escape the feeling of being trapped. She eels homesick for her family back in India and face the life of drudgery.

Rosa, a Canadian, could see beyond Chand’s veil (deep wounds on her face) and she lends out her helping hand to this woman by gifting her a root that is supposed to have a magical effect and bring out the love of the recipient. Chand struggles to find any solution and her desperation rises to a level to which she starts fantasizing her life entwining an ancient Indian fable about a King Cobra. This BR Films production will be released with an 'A' certificate as the censor board objected to some brutal scenes. Deepa Mehta has refused to tone down the battering scenes on Preity Zinta defending that creative efforts cannot be sacrificed.

There were talks among the people that Videsh is a similar movie to that of Jagmohan Mudra’s ‘Provoked’ but Deepa however has now cleared the misconception that her movie is not at all similar to Provoked. The writer cum director feels the movie is all about young women who come from villages and towns in India and go to Canada and get married and get no support from their in-laws. The essence of the film, she suggests, is to highlight social issues and domestic violence. Coming to the theatres on 27th march, the movie is expected to add another feather to the crown of this renowned director. Preity Zinta has already won the ‘Best Actress’ award at the Chicago film festival, and also got nominated at the 29th Genie Awards, regarded as the Canadian equivalent to the Oscars.
