They were once the most successful onscreen pair in Bollywood and after a long wait the audience will get the scope to reprise the feeling as Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol come together for this directorial venture of Karan Johar. My Name is Khan tells the story of a Muslim child from Mumbai named Rizwan Khan.
The child suffers from Asperger syndrome and therefore shows difficulties in social interaction. Rizwan, who grew up with his mother, has restricted behavioural patterns. His mother Zarina Wahab lives in the Borivali suburb of Mumbai. The real story starts when the adult Rizwan (Shahrukh Khan) falls for Mandira (Kajol). During Rizwan’s visit to US he meets Mandira, a Hindu single mother, who resides in San Francisco. The problem crops when they marry each other and also become partners in a business.
Ordeals do not allow them to embark on a happy life forcing them to part their ways. Post 9/11, life of Rizwan and Mandira take a rough turn with one hurdle superseding the other. Keeping the 9/11 as he constant backdrop, story of Shibani Bathija focuses on the struggle of an individual represented by Rizwan. The rest concerns on Rizwan’s ceaseless effort to win his love back as he ventures out on a long journey across the US.
My Name is Khan, as Shah Rukh says, is about a relationship on different layers. The film is about relationship between two individuals and also between an individual and the nation. The actor had said about My Name is Khan to be an unbiased take on “the journey of one family and how it changes because of 9/11". Director Karan Johar feels the film has high relevance in times like this when unity of our nation is of heightened importance. The director states that his film is neither about religion nor about taking sides but it is about educating the audience that “terrorism has no religion”.
Like other Karan Johar ventures, My Name is Khan is expected to have a strong presence of music with a host of famed singers including Rashid Khan, Shankar Mahadevan and Shreya Ghoshal contributing to the songs of the film. The noted trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy has directed music for the film. The upcoming film got the unexpected promotion from unpleasant corners and it is already riding high on popularity quotient.
