Digital Camera

A digital camera is a device which can capture still images and videos or both digitally where the images are recorded on a light sensitive sensor. Digital cameras can also record sound. In a digital camera one can get a display of the image shot. Numerous images are recorded in an in-built memory device. A digital camera can perform a number of function together which include video recording along with sound, edit images, and the memory storage can be reused by deletion of the images. Today digital cameras are also set in mobile phones which in a way have popularized the use of digital camera.

There are various types of digital camera and they are categorized as follows:

Compact Digital Cameras: these cameras are noted for the compactness and simplicity of the device and the images are stored instantly into the memory device by compressing it into JPEG format. These cameras often have in-built flash systems and photographer can get a preview of the image being shot on the display screen. These cameras have a greater depth of field which allows distant objects to be in sharp focus. Smaller digital cameras are often referred to as subcompacts or "ultra-compacts" and are appropriate to click some casual and quick shots.

Bridge Cameras: These are higher-end digital cameras which look like DSLRs and have some advanced features and delivers quality images by using the concept of compact framing of the subjects which is possible with the live preview option on the display screen along with small sensor sizes. These cameras often have wide zoom range. These cameras can be used to shoot movies with audio. Many digital devices falling under this category can store images in RAW format. These digital products also have a built-in flash system.

Digital single lens reflex cameras: These cameras have an automatic mirror system and pentaprism or pentamirror which direct light from the lens through the eyepiece of the viewfinder.

Digital rangefinders: Epson R-D1 was the first digital rangefinder camera invented in the year 2004.

Professional modular digital camera systems and Line-scan camera systems are also high end digital cameras and are used by professionals for specific use.

Three main methods can be used to capture images in a digital camera which are the single-shot capture method, multi-shot capture method and the scanning method. The methods differ with the color filters and hardware configuration of the sensor in a particular digital camera. Many digital cameras can also be connected directly to a computer to transfer the data or the images shot by use of USB or a FireWire port, wireless connections via Bluetooth and the card reader. Many digital cameras have preset modes which can be used for different application to change the exposure, focus, aperture, white balance, light metering and equivalent sensitivity. The data in a digital camera are stored in JPEG format or TIFF format.

With all these advantages and user friendly approach, digital cameras have gained a huge popularity and are used buy both amateurs and experts to photograph various images.
