San Francisco, May 11: There was a long hiatus on Twitter on Monday night and it was unnaturally long. Tweeples were not ready for the shock when they discovered that their followers and following count were brought down to 0, thanks to the Twitter bug. As Twitter tweets from its official account, "Follow count display is set to 0 and follow/unfollow is temporarily offline while we fix a bug."

Stating the problem Twitter made a declaration within few minutes that it had "identified and resolved a bug that permitted a user to 'force' other users to follow them." The twitter team further added that they it was aware of the follower/following numbers and is working "to rollback all abuse of the bug that took place."

According to the Twitter spokesman Sean Garrett, the bug is real, and his team was focused on fixing it. However, it was not clear about the duration of the bug's existence. It was yet to be confirmed whether this bug could actually give Twitter users the access to the contents of protected accounts.

It was only few months back that twitter had doubled the tweet counts of the users. This social networking site has been occasionally plagued by downtime, unexpected change in tweet counts and lost profile images. Twitter had earlier admitted that it is facing problems regarding phone settings, and misdelivery of direct messages. It blamed the problem to "underlying data inconsistency" in its service.
