Kolkata, Sep 2: It was socializing with food and discussion for the social media enthusiasts in Kolkata today afternoon as they made themselves the part of a social media lunch (SML) discussion hosted by Twitsnaps (@twitsnaps), the first of its kind in the city.
The discussion kickstarted with Shilpa Srivastava (@Shilps31) embarking on how one's social media identity has become inseparable from one's real-life identity. The discussion shifted to a rather pertinent issue on the need for creating a common platform and Social Media Unique Identity across all domains in order to keep track of the multiple social network accounts an individual has.
One of the participants cited example of a website that provides just the same. It helps the users find simpler way to stay connected with all the social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook and others.
While referring to Hi5, Subhankar Mazumdar (@ishubho) rued the fact that users of social networking platforms often tend to dwell in personal chit-chats that don't generally add value to their social media identities. Subhankar has around five accounts on social media sites under his name and he is a regular user.
Talking a cue from him, Sanjib Chakravorty (@isanzc) harped on the rampant use of words and phrases that don't have any actual relevance with the topic on which they tweet. A similar issue was raised by Srijita Deb (@srisanj) who talked about lack of filtering of content in the posts made by the users of social media sites. Impulsive and mindless postings are not what are expected from responsible social media people, marked Srijita, a content developer by profession.
Talking about the algorithm of the 'who to follow' recommendations on Twitter, Nishad Mehare (@nishad_m), a software professional, came up with an observation on how one's bio on this social networking site influences Twitter's inference about his or her social media identity. The young software professional believes that one's location also influences Twitter recommendations. Noting Nishad's remarks, others also shared similar opinions.
According to some, the recommendations that Twitter send to its users are mainly on the basis of the kind of Twitterers they are following.
Drawing an analogy between social media and traditional media, Samudranil Mukherjee, (@Samundranil_m), a media professional, posited how the former is more democratic in nature and how it allows people to interact and express their gripe and suggestions. His remark found an echo in one of them who added that social media has come up as a watchdog for the traditional media houses as the users of these sites are the first to react to any prevarication of news.
The general consensus reflected on how the social media enthusiasts are advocating a new change in the way the users utilize these sites. They voiced in favour of a unique social media identity to make communication and sharing a much simpler exercise. |
