| New Delhi: Gone are those days when development of social networking service was confined only to the Western countries as a new entrant from India is making its presence felt. SMSGupShup is a social messaging service for the ones who want to connect with friends and fans and share details. This social networking site claims to have more than 25 million users with more than billions of messages being sent.
Proving the myth wrong, the Indian service SMSGupShup is argued to have been more successful than Twitter when it comes to turning mass appeal into revenue earning mechanism.
SMSGupShup has gained enough ground in its features with the one being the integration of SMS text messages sent from phones. SMSGupShup has advantage over Twitter in the fact that the entire service of the former can be accessed as a mobile-only system with website playing no major role.
This service has brought into light one important aspect of region-centric social networking. SMSGupShup has flourished on the basis that mobile phones are increasingly being preferred by the Indians as an alternative to a PCs and laptops.
It is to be noted that India has almost 10 times more mobile phone users than web users and phone is extensively used as a cheap option to communicate. SMSGupShup owes much of its success to the large base of mobile users in India and the site's success can be considered as the first major stride towards developing social networking in India.
While the technology analysts continue to argue over the feasibility of following traditional approach and catering to global taste, SMSGupShup keeps on thriving. |
