London, May 22: Tai Chi, a low impact martial art, can relieve depression and boost self-esteem, says a latest study.

Researchers have also found that practicing the precise movements also reduces stress and anxiety. The art is designed to promote relaxation and improve balance, strength and suppleness, reports the media.

"Tai Chi has been practised for centuries for health and fitness in the East and is currently gaining popularity in the West. It is believed to improve mood and enhance overall psychological well being, but convincing evidence has so far been lacking," experts said.

The researchers said there is a need for more intensive and in-depth study of Tai Chi so that more benefits of it can be known.

"More detailed knowledge about the physiological and psychological effects of Tai Chi exercise may lead to new approaches to promote health, treat chronic medical conditions, better inform clinical decisions and further explicate the mechanisms of successful mind-body medicine," they said. (IANS)
