| Distress as we all know is a negative kind of stress which is the source of anxiety, has a negative impact on our performance and can cause mental or physical problems if persistent. Eustress on the other hand is a positive stress which is motivating, improves concentration and performance.
What we basically need is to avoid distress and stay with eustress as it helps us a lot in our day to day activities. Now let us learn through a few examples how we can practically implement this in our daily lives.
Let us take a simple example. Suppose you are an employed person. A simple example of eustress would be the pains you take to get up early everyday so that you reach your office in time. So you take all measures- setting morning alarms so that you do not reach office late by any chance. You reach office on time daily and your boss is happy to see your punctuality. This motivates you and improves your efficiency.
Now look at the same task from a different perspective. You do not bother to fix a morning alarm to wake you up on time or you fail to wake up when the alarm rings. As a result, you get late for office. If this continues for long, your boss gets angry, warns you and all this adds to increased stress within you i.e. distress. It may cause tension and anxiety and may lead to depression or other health disorders in future.
It depends on us that how we take control of situation to stay within eustress frame and do not reach distress levels. Often circumstances are not in our hand, but when and where possible, we should avoid distress.
