Kolkata: Mingling a glorious tradition with modern sensibility, old-fashioned charm with contemporary eclecticism, and a rich sensuality with polished, urban serenity, Monapali's Kolkata Fashion Week Earth Couture collection celebrates rawness and earthiness juxtaposed with sophistication and elegance. It's an ode to the beauty of the feminine form, the mix of absolute opposites - rawness and luxury. An almost seamless fusion of contrasting colours, checks, cuts and fabrics lends the collection its novelty.
Materials are mixed, moulded and sculptured into bold new dimensions in a vibrant colour palette set in natural fabrics. A mix of styles conjures up a fusion feel. An abundance of designs and fabric mixtures in exuberant styling adds a dramatic flair. The embroidery, on the ensembles is a devotional exercise in thread work and beadwork. It's a theme that lends itself perfectly to elaborating carefully composed contrasts - a soft yet raw look with a provocative feel.
The inspiration stems from the tribal heritage of India. A metamorphosis of shape, colour, fabric, size, proportion, Monapali's Kolkata Fashion Week is a time to experiment, to play, to be footloose and fancy free.
Colours: Vibrant palette in blue, red, green, wine and orange.
Fabrics: Soft, elegant fabrics have been juxtaposed with rustic, matt, structured materials.
Silhouette: A mix of modern and classic cuts, with fusion as the mainstay. Dunagree skirts, kaftans, tunics, kurtas and saris find their way into the collection. Soft, sensual, elegant yet structured and in control the silhouette balances contrasts.
Embellishment: The collection celebrates the charm of craft. Beadwork is the choice for embroidery along with thread. Surface texturing is the key word.
About Mona Pali:
Mona and Pali share a home and a cause: Designing. The duo gave in to an inner compulsion, a natural aesthetic urge to pursue a dream in design with total dedication and determination opting out of their respective professions. They were amongst the first few designers to hit the Indian catwalk more than two decades ago; creating a niche when designing was an alien concept in India.
They were the ones who revived the traditional Indian art and crafts like Kantha, Folk Art (Madhubani, Worli, Pattachitra), tribal motifs and the Alpana from the realms of oblivion and elevated it to the status of haute couture culture.
They have been a part of the New Delhi International Fashion Week 2002 where they shared the platform with international designers like Russel Sage, Vassilios Kostetsos, Manuel Fernandez, Miranda Oosting and Daniel Herman, to name just a few. In October 2002 they were the first designers from the sub continent to participate in the Toronto Fashion Week.
They have even designed for the Indian film industry and several international celebrities. H.E Adrianne Clarksons, Governor General of Canada being just one of their many clients. The likes of Patrick Swayze, Aishwarya Rai, Sushmita Sen, Bipasha Basu, Tina Ambani, Shabana Azmi, Nikki Bedi, Tabu, Lady Swaraj Paul, Juhi Chawla, Kiran Kher, Aparna Sen, Sarla Birla, Madhu Neotia, Priti Goenka, Shirin Paul, to mention just a few have been on their list too.
Mona and Pali are founder members of the Fashion Design Council of India and Pali is currently on the board of the council.
In 1993 the designers did the Mumbai Miss India Fashion Show followed in consecutive years were the Mumbai ELLE Magazine Launch Show, Mumbai Bacardi Diwali Fiesta, NIFT Shows, Calcutta All India Hotel Convention, Launch of the ITC Sonar Bangla in Kolkata, The Look at the Oberoi grand hotel Kolkata, Midnight Fashion at The Tantra at The Park Kolkata, Inner Eye Fashion Show, The Grand, Kolkata; Lakme India Fashion Week (2000-2004) and ABM Amro bank show in Kolkata.
