New Delhi Telling a story so as to captivate the readers is an art and to hone the skill a workshop was organised in the capital today to give valuable tips to young authors.

Jaishree Mishra, the author of best-selling "Ancient Promises", gave tips to amateur authors on how to weave stories and make one's writing effective. The workshop was organised by Harper Collins Publications India and Oxford Bookstore.

"One must live life and get into the character and enhance the real life to make a good fiction," said Mishra elaborating the key skills necessary for an author to make story effective.

The aspiring authors from colleges like the Lady Sri Ram College and Gargi College of Delhi University listened to Mishra with rapt attention.

"While writing a book one must choose the genre that suits the character and should be written in simple language. Pen pictures, emotional punches, suspense, adventure and heightened reality give more effect to your stories. Dialogues give life to the book and are very crucial," Mishra told the gathering.

"Carry the same style throughout the book and be careful of the landscape and community while elaborating the atmosphere."

Mishra has published four novels. Her book "Secrets and Lies" have been launched recently. She has written several books on special needs, child care, as a broadcast journalist, and is currently employed as a film and video examiner at the British Board of Film Classification in London. (IANS)
