| Chennai, July 30: As per the new order passed by Madras high court, registered practitioners in ayurveda, homeopathy and unani can conduct surgery and practice gynaecology, anaesthesiology, ENT, and ophthalmology.
In reply to the contempt of court petition filed by the Tamil Nadu Siddha Medical Graduates Association Justice F M Ibrahim Kalifulla also ordered to drop the penal action against those practitioners who dabbled in allopathy.
The Madras High Court ruling is contrary to another order delivered by a judge on the petition filed by two unani practitioners. The practitioners had sought similar favour from the court.
It was only in February this year that Justice K K Sasidharan had held that the practitioners of Indian system of medicines must not practise allopathy. The judge had also added that police can take action against those medical practitioners who attempt to practice allopathy without qualification.
Justice Kalifulla was seen referring to section 17(3)B of the Indian Medicine Central Council Act 1970, which clearly mentions that institutionally qualified practitioners of ayurveda, unani, siddha, and homeopathy can practise respective system with modern scientific medicine, which also includes surgery, anaesthesiology and ENT. |
