| Kolkata, Feb 10: Antarctica has always been thought of as the southernmost continent and the coldest area on the planet. Visiting it was only supposed to be for scientific purposes and the question of visa never really came up but now, the question of territorial sovereignty has become a serious one.
In such a context the latest Fry-day Poll asks an important question - Will we soon need a visa to get to Antarctica? The accompanying infographic provides a historic timeline of the countries that have claimed the country from the initial years of the 20th century - beginning with the UK's claim over the British Antarctic Territory Region in 1908 to the latest claims being made by Argentina in 1942.
The infographic also highlights several important issues like the Mary Byrd Land sector and the clash of claims among the UK, Argentina and Chile that are yet to be solved.
Antarctica is presently administered by the Antarctica Treaty System and became effective from June 23, 1961. The new Fry-day poll infographic sheds light on the impact made by the treaty aside from mentioning the signatories - a list that includes several countries from every continent in the world. It also informs the problems being faced the treaty system.
