Offences Against Religion

Indian Penal Code describes Offences Against Religion. It is also known as offences relating to religion. It describes that each and every Indian has full freedom to follow his own religion. If anyone insults the religion of another person, then the act will be considered as a punishable offence. There are total five sections in this Indian Penal Code describing the Offences Against Religion. You can go through some of these sections-

  • Section 295. This section describes Injuring or defiling place of worship, with intent to insult the religion of any class: Whoever destroys, damages or defiles any place of worship, or any object held sacred by any class of persons, with the intention of thereby insulting the religion of any class of persons or with the knowledge that any class of persons is likely to consider such destruction, damage or defilement as an insult to their religion, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both.
  • Section 296 of Indian Penal Code also describes about the Offences Against Religion. This section deals with the disturbing religious assembly. If a person voluntarily causes disturbance to any assembly legally engaged in the performance of any kind of religious worship or ceremonies, shall be punished. The person should be punished with imprisonment that may extend to one year, or shall be punished with fine, or with both punishment and fine.
  • Section 297. The act 297 describes about the act of trespassing on burial places. This law depicts Whoever, with the intention of wounding the feelings of any person, or of insulting the religion of any person, or with the knowledge that the feelings of any person are likely to be wounded, or that the religion of any person is likely to be insulted thereby,Commits any trespass in any place of worship or on any place of sepulture, or any place set apart for the performance of funeral rites or as a depository for the remains of the dead, or offers any indignity to any human corpse, or causes disturbance to any persons assembled for the performance of funeral ceremonies shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine, or with both.
