Indian Penal Code Facts

Indian Penal Code Facts relate all the crimes, offences and wrong-doings to the articles and their sections under which the criminals and the offenders are punished by the court of law. Every Indian citizen is entitled to be punished under Indian Penal Code according to the nature and intention of the offence committed. The Indian Penal Code or IPC also covers the crime committed on a ship or an air-craft within Indian boundaries.

The Indian Penal Code was put into effect in 1862 during the British rule. Since then, it has been undergoing several amendments at regular intervals. The IPC was first drafted by the First Law Commission under the chairmanship of Lord Macaulay. While preparing the draft, helps were sought from Livingstone's Code of Louisiana and the French Penal Code. Later, the draft of the IPC was put under careful revision by Sir Barnes Peacock, Chief Justice of the then Calcutta Supreme Court.

The spectrum of Indian Penal Code is very wide. Some of the common offences which are dealt by the IPC include:

  • Offences Affecting the Human Body
  • Offences Against Property
  • Offences relating to Marriage
  • Offences Against the State
  • Offences Against Religion
