UNGA president to arrive on Monday for three-day visit

| New Delhi, May 2: United Nations General Assembly president Ali Abdussalam Treki will arrive in India on Monday for a three-day visit during which he will discuss UN reforms with Indian officials.
A career diplomat, 72-year-old Treki has been Libya's minister in charge of African Union affairs. He was elected at the 64th UNGA in June last year.
A press release said that the visit provides "timely opportunity" for Treki to hold talks on wide ranging issues on the UNGA agenda, including development, peace and security, UN reforms and a number of international and regional issues.
Treki's visit comes only a few day after India's Permanent Representative to the UN Hardeep Puri said that the general assembly should take the lead in setting global agenda and restore primacy, which had been encroached by the United Nations Security Council.
"The general assembly should take the lead in setting the global agenda and restoring the centrality of the United Nations in formulating multilateral approaches to resolving transnational issues," Puri said on April 27.
During his talks with Indian officials, Treki is also likely to highlight the significance of the September 2010 High Level Plenary Meeting of the General Assembly to review the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals.
Treki will reach Delhi from China. He will leave India on May 5 for Pakistan, the last leg of his Asian tour. (IANS) |
