| Kolkata: Former US assistant secretary of state for South Asia Karl F. Inderfurth on Friday pitched for making India a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
"India's contribution to the United Nations' peace keeping activities for so many years and the country's importance internationally make it a natural candidate for permanent membership," he said during an interactive session organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here.
Inderfurth, also a professor at George Washington University, stressed the need for expanding the Security Council to reflect the realities of the present century.
India and China should be included in the G-8, he added.
"If the 19th century has seen the rise of Germany, the rise of the US defines the 20th century. Similarly, the 21st century will see the rise of India and China, which will transform the global geo-political landscape of the globe," he said.
Laying emphasis on the need for cooperation among the US, India and China, Inderfurth said there should be a 'cooperative triangle' rather than 'competitive triangle' among the three nations. (IANS) |
