| Kathmandu: The Nepalese government had to cede to consistent pressure and declare null and void the contract it had given to India for publishing Machine Readable Passports.
The contract was for four million passports and was valued at $4 for every piece. It was awarded to an Indian enterprise following the rejection of several governmental tenders.
The Nepal Cabinet issued the order to the Foreign Ministry to do away with the contract. They have also asked for a competitive bidding procedure to be put in place for the said contract as per governmental regulations.
The Public Accounts Committee of the Nepal Parliament had already twice asked the government to call the contract off. Incidentally the national government had taken the decision in a unilateral manner.
Sujata Koirala, the Deputy Prime Minister, who is responsible for the Foreign Ministry, had supposedly acted in defiance of the directives issued by the Public Accounts Committee and gone on to procure the approval of the Prime Minister in awarding the said contract.
However, the Public Accounts Committee stood its ground and was supported by the Supreme Court that issued an order on an interim basis that prevented the government from going ahead with the deal. |
