Shillong: Border Security Force (BSF) troopers on Friday held two Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) militants along the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya, officials said.

"Rishot Lyngdoh and Suk Kharakor were detained by our patrol party from a village near Dawki after they attending an HNLC meeting inside Bangladesh," a BSF official said on condition of anonymity.

"We are interrogating them to find out more," the official said.

However, Superintendent of Police Claudia A. Lyngwa told the that the police had no proper information about the identities of the arrested militants.

"We will know the real identity of the detained men only after the BSF hands them over to the state police," she said.

The HNLC, which runs hit-and-run operations from its hideout in Bangladesh, has been demanding a sovereign Khasi homeland in Meghalaya.

Meghalaya shares a 443-km border with Bangladesh, part of which is porous, hilly and unfenced and prone to frequent infiltration. (IANS)
